Proven Health Benefits of Coriander (Cilantro)

One of the most common herbs that we see in use today, coriander is included in foods around the world because of its ability to grow in many different regions. The herb is entirely edible, though the parts that you have probably eaten the most are the leaves, which contain much of the nutrition and taste. Coriander is not a big plant, and doesn’t usually get eaten in large amounts, but it can pack a big punch healthwise.

You may have also heard coriander called by another name, cilantro, which is the word that’s used more frequently in the western parts of the world such as the United States and Mexico. No matter what you call it or what food you’re adding it to, coriander can make for a great addition thanks to its health benefits. A quarter of a cup of coriander (or four grams in other words) is going to give you a lot of surprise nutrition. You’ll find just under one calorie in that serving, which is even less than you’d find in your daily vitamin. Though there isn’t an overload of vitamins to be found in coriander, you will still be getting a small amount of fiber and fatty acids. The main key here is vitamin K, with 16 percent of your daily recommended value.

There is also a healthy amount of vitamin A at five percent, with a smaller amount of vitamin C, vitamin E and folate. There are even low amounts of minerals in coriander, with potassium, calcium and manganese all present. Now, coriander shouldn’t replace your daily multivitamin, but it makes for a nice low calorie tool that you normally use anyway to get some extra help. You also don’t have to worry about sugar, cholesterol or anything like that.

Coriander is going to have great benefits if you are looking to improve your skin. There are a lot of antioxidants to be found in coriander, and it has been shown to help relieve inflammation while clearing up many different problems. Discomfort that is brought on by inflammation in your joints or organs (such as the kidneys) can be relieved with more coriander. Now, this doesn’t mean rubbing it on your skin, but instead the essential oil that contains coriander extract.

If you suffer from dry skin or even acne, you can moisturize and wash away the skin with this extract. You’ll find coriander in many different beauty products for skin, and it can even help you with a dry scalp. Having dandruff can be one of the factors where hair is not growing correctly, leading to fuller and faster growing hair.

Overall, there really isn’t much out there not to like about coriander. There are some people that are allergic to coriander and other similar plants, but they most likely knew that was the case before reading further on the herb. The only negatives outside of that are that people with low blood sugar or low blood pressure might not see what would be benefits to other people. Since coriander can help lower these numbers, it could cause an unhealthy result in some cases.

The extract of coriander might also cause a rash for rare groups of people, but this is also rare. Other than that, there really isn’t much concern at all when it comes to coriander’s use. Adding the herb to foods or even chomping on the leaves by themselves is going to give you a big overall boost in health, so consider adding more to your diet. If for no other reason than to have some very fresh breath.
